I'm Charlie Campbell, an artist and clothing designer based in San Diego, California. I've been sewing clothes for the past 3 years, and drawing since I was a little kid. I create upcycled clothing, screen prints, and art that I sell at markets all around San Diego.
Almost all my clothing is upcycled, e.i. created from other used clothing, which leads to a creation process like having a conversation with my material. Flat fabric which is used for most new clothing is very agreeable and nice, but doesn't have a lotta edge. They're not very fun to be around. Used clothing on the other hand, has a lot of opinions and is kind of an asshole, but is really intriguing. No matter what I wanna do, I know my materials may not be interested and or cooperate. So I've learned to come in with an open mind, and let my material decide the little details, using their limitations as guidance. This often leads to designs I could never have thought of alone, because a bit of the old clothes' character is still in there. Its a wild and often frustrating ride (a lotta yelling), but the compromise is always beautiful.
